The variety has been known since the 1870s and is historically linked to the German city of Braunschweig. In international classification, the names Rossa scura di Brunswick, Брунсвик, Braunschweiger dunkelblutrote, and Rouge foncé are grouped together.
The bulbs have a round-flat shape and dry scales of an intense dark red color. The flesh is succulent with a semi-pungent taste. Under favorable growing conditions, the weight of the bulbs reaches 115 g or more.
