The plant forms light green or dark green leaves with a pronounced puckered surface, the position of which can be semi-erect or erect. A key feature is the very white petioles, which possess high culinary qualities.

The variety is a versatile vegetable plant used in cooking, and often serves as a reference specimen when describing other Swiss chard varieties. Under this name, various breeding lines or races may be encountered, such as race B or race Ampuis.
