The variety Ferosacre (breeding number CA90) is a hybrid between Castanea sativa and Castanea crenata. It is characterized by vigorous growth, high yield, and good tolerance to soils with poor aeration. The variety possesses high resistance to ink disease caused by Phytophthora and is tolerant to chestnut mosaic virus.

The plant is sensitive to temperatures below -10 °C and enters fruiting late. Using the variety as a rootstock may contribute to earlier onset of vegetation of the scion, which increases the risk of damage by spring frosts. The variety propagates well by cuttings and layering, however, it has genetic incompatibility with some clones of pure Castanea sativa.
