The plant forms compact, dense heads of round or oval shape. The leaves are colored an intense red-purple, which becomes more pronounced with the onset of cold weather. The leaves possess a crunchy texture and a characteristic slightly bitter taste, which softens under the influence of low temperatures.

The variety is late-maturing and possesses high cold tolerance, allowing it to be cultivated as an autumn-winter plant. It is used primarily as a salad crop: consumed fresh in salads, and also in culinary applications for preparing pasta, risotto, or in baked and fried forms.
