The plant forms compact, dense round or barrel-shaped heads 12–20 cm in height and 20–25 cm in width. The weight of a typical head is 600–800 g. The leaves have a wine-red color with distinct, broad white central veins.

The variety is mid-season or mid-late; the period from sowing to harvest takes from 85–90 days up to 4–6 months. The crop is cold-hardy and capable of withstanding frosts, during which the leaf color becomes more intense. It requires well-drained soils and protection from water stress.

The leaves possess the bitter flavor characteristic of radicchio, which softens upon cooling or heat treatment. The produce is used fresh for salads and is also suitable for stewing, grilling, and adding to risotto and pasta.
