The plant belongs to the Acanthaceae family and reaches a height of 10–15 cm. It has oval-elliptical leaves with wavy margins. The main decorative feature is the contrasting reticulated vein pattern: white in the White Tiger variety or pink-red in the Pink Tiger variety, set against a dark green background.

Fittonia is a ground-cover plant with creeping stems that root easily at the nodes. The flowers are small, yellowish or grey, and gathered in spike-like inflorescences. The plant is sensitive to dry air, drafts, and direct sunlight, and is susceptible to root rots if overwatered.
