The plant forms a large spreading shrub 1.5 to 2.5 m in height and width. The leaves are lanceolate, medium-green in color, and have distinct pubescence, which gives them a velvety texture.
The inflorescences are flat corymbs 15–35 cm in diameter. The center of the inflorescence consists of small fertile flowers in pinkish-lilac shades, framed by larger sterile flowers that change color from white or light pink to lilac.
Flowering occurs from July–August to September–October. The plant is frost-hardy down to -25 °C, prefers partial shade, areas protected from the wind, and moist, drained soils.
