The botanical form Hydrangea paniculata f. velutina Nakai (known in Japan as Birōdo-nori-utsugi) occurs in nature in Japan and Korea. It is a deciduous shrub that is extremely rare in Western horticulture and is practically absent in mass nurseries.
The main distinctive morphological feature of the form is the presence of dense velvety hairs on both sides of the leaf blades. This form is not a cultivar bred for commercial production and is of interest primarily for botanical collections.
