The plant reaches a height of 80 to 150 cm. The lacecap-type inflorescences are flat, consisting of small central fertile flowers and larger sterile flowers on the edges. The color of the inflorescences depends on the soil pH level: on acidic soils they acquire a blue tint, while on neutral or alkaline soils they turn pink or crimson.
Young spring leaves often have a purple tint, turn green in summer, and color in shades of purple or burgundy in autumn. The flowering period lasts from June to September-October. The plant's winter hardiness reaches -30°C.
The leaves of the variety contain the natural sweetener phyllodulcin, which is why the plant is traditionally grown in Japan for the production of the sweet beverage Amacha. In ornamental gardening, it is used for single and group plantings, as well as in container gardening.
