The fruits of this old French variety have a characteristic ribbed shape. The skin is colored pale red with a yellowish tint. The flesh of the fruits is tender and juicy, possessing a moderately sweet taste with possible wine or strawberry notes.

Varieties of the Calville group are historically used as dessert and culinary apples. They are suitable for baking, making purees, compotes, and producing cider. When grown in certain regions, the fruits may be subject to severe infestation by codling moth.
