Small fruits with a diameter of 5–10 mm are yellow, orange, or red in color and ripen in September, often remaining on the branches throughout the winter. The species possesses high frost hardiness, drought tolerance, and resistance to diseases, including scab.
The plant is used primarily as an ornamental, honey-bearing crop and a valuable rootstock for cultivated apple varieties. The fruits are considered unpalatable and are used for processing or as feed for wild animals and birds.
