The Lucio variety is one of the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula, with a history of use dating back to the 7th century. It is associated with a possible introduction from North Africa. Today, this variety is considered practically endangered, and its range is limited to the municipality of Illora in Andalusia.
The variety is classified as an oil olive and is most often used in blends with other varieties, such as Picual. Oil from the fruits of this variety has an intense fruity aroma with notes of fig, fresh wood, and green tomato, as well as balanced bitterness and pungency.
Lucio is characterized by low productivity. Mechanization of harvesting is difficult, which became one of the key reasons for the reduction in its cultivation volumes on an industrial scale in the 20th century.
