The Lumiaru variety is distributed mainly in the Agrigento and Catania regions of Sicily. It is characterized by late fruit ripening and a low fruit set intensity, which is less than 2% per fertile flower.

The plant belongs to genetically studied but rare varieties. The oil obtained from the fruits of this variety is distinguished by its low acidity. Lumiaru is officially authorized for use in the production of olive oil with the Protected Geographical Indication IGP Sicilia.
