The Maçanilha Algarvia variety, also known as Maçanilha de Tavira, is a traditional local variety. The tree has medium growth vigor, and the fruits have a characteristic shape resembling an apple, which determined the name of the variety.
The plant possesses high tolerance to drought, soil salinity, and cold. Yield is characterized by periodicity. Due to the weak attachment of the fruits to the peduncle, the variety is suitable for mechanical harvesting.
The variety is used both for producing olive oil with aromas of freshly cut grass and slight piquancy, and as a table olive. Table fruits are valued for their size, flesh firmness, and ease of pitting; they are often processed using traditional methods without the use of alkali.
