The variety is autochthonous to the province of Lecce in the Apulia region and is historically known by the names Uggiana or Usciana. It received its name from the commune of Uggiano la Chiesa, and the first mentions of its characteristics date back to agronomic works of the 18th century.

The plant is described as vigorous. The variety is included in modern studies of the genetic diversity of Apulian germplasm, including in the context of assessing resistance to the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes olive quick decline syndrome.
