The variety originates from the Salento region, and its name is etymologically linked to the commune of Uggiano la Chiesa. Historical references to the variety are found in 18th-century works, where an initial analysis of the morphological traits of the fruits and pits was conducted.

Under modern conditions, the variety is being studied as part of the genetic heritage using molecular markers for the identification and preservation of rare species. Detailed agronomic characteristics, such as yield, disease resistance, or the intended use of the harvest, are not presented in open publications.
