The term is used in Piedmont and other regions of Italy to denote local landraces and clones of sweet cherry. These plants are the result of many years of traditional selection and adaptation to local conditions, rather than a product of modern breeding work.

Fruits of this group are distinguished by firm flesh and good resistance to rots. The harvest is used both for fresh consumption and for processing, including the preparation of alcoholic infusions and liqueurs.
