The tree reaches a height of 20–25 meters and possesses a slender trunk and a dense crown. The plant's fruits are small, edible, but usually bitter or sweet-sour, significantly inferior in consumer characteristics to modern table varieties.

The plant is characterized by high winter hardiness, withstanding temperatures down to -20°C and lower. It is demanding regarding growing conditions: it prefers deep, fresh, and rich soils and is sensitive to waterlogging in the ground.
