The name Visciola di Vignola refers not to an individual bred variety, but to a population of sour cherries historically grown in the province of Modena. In Italy, the term visciola is used to designate Prunus cerasus, which is distinct from sweet cherry.

The characteristics of these plants vary, as this is a group rather than a single variety. Trees of this species typically reach a height of 4–6 meters and are considered more resistant to cold down to -30°C and poor soils compared to sweet cherry.

The fruits of this group are characterized by a dark red color, rounded shape, juicy pulp, and a pronounced acidic taste. They are traditionally used in local cuisine for the preparation of wines, syrups, liqueurs, and preserves.
