The Brompton rootstock belongs to the vigorous types, with trees on it reaching a height of over 4.5 meters. Due to its hardiness, it is suitable for cultivation in poor soils; however, because of the large size of mature plants, it is rarely used in modern intensive orchards, where dwarf rootstocks are preferred.
The primary purpose of this rootstock is the cultivation of plums in traditional orchards or over large areas. In historical sources, the name Brompton is sometimes mistakenly associated with the dessert plum variety Kirke's Blue, known as Old Brompton, however, in modern catalogs, the term most often refers specifically to the rootstock.
