Brussels is used as a rootstock for grafting various plum varieties. During specialized trials, for example at East Malling, a problem of incompatibility between this rootstock and certain plum varieties was identified, in particular with the Czar variety.
Unlike modern clonal rootstocks, older variants propagated by seeds often demonstrated variability in characteristics. In literature from the XIX–XX centuries, the name Brussels is sometimes erroneously associated with the Belle de Louvain variety, which is an independent fruit variety.
