The variety belongs to the species Prunus insititia and is used primarily as a vegetatively propagatedrootstock. When grown on its own roots, it forms semi-dwarf trees prone to the formation of root suckers. The fruits on such trees are small, 3–4 cm in diameter, with yellow skin and flesh.
The plant possesses winter hardiness down to -20°C (USDA zones 6–7) and resistance to bacterial canker and Phytophthora. It is demanding regarding soil type: it grows well on calcareous soils, yet is sensitive to heavy and waterlogged sites. Popular clonal selections include St. Julien A and St. Julien 655/2.
