The variety is considered ancient and grows in Apulia. The name, which translates from Italian as "dark eye," was given by local farmers due to the characteristic dark color of the nut shell. The variety is of historical and agrobiological interest.

The fruit has a heart shape. The shell is characterized by thickness, medium pore density, and a slightly curved and moderately open dorsal suture. The kernel is medium-sized, elliptical, covered with a wrinkled, medium-brown skin with moderate pubescence; the taste is sweet.

It belongs to the group of varieties that mature in the second ten-day period of September.
