The plant is a large shrub or small tree 2 to 12 meters tall with a dense spherical crown. The fruits ripen in July-August; they are small, bitter, and barely edible, although the kernels of the pits are used to produce an aromatic spice with an almond-cherry scent.
The species is distinguished by high heat resistance and drought tolerance, and it thrives well on poor, stony, and calcareous soils. Winter hardiness is assessed as satisfactory, although it may prove insufficient in northern regions.
In agriculture, mahaleb cherry is a classic seed rootstock that ensures the adaptation of scions to unfavorable soil conditions. It is also used in landscape design due to its decorative flowering and in artisanal production, where its aromatic wood is valued.
