10 August 2026
The plant is a deciduous large shrub or small tree ranging from 2 to 12 meters in height with a dense crown. The leaves are alternate, shiny, and dark green. The flowers are small, white, fragrant, and gathered in raceme-like inflorescences. The fruits are small black drupes with a tart-bitter taste.
The species possesses high drought tolerance and the ability to grow on rocky and calcareous soils. In horticulture, it is used as a vigorous rootstock for sour and sweet cherries, providing good compatibility and high productivity of grafted trees. The plant is also used in ornamental gardening and for obtaining spice from the seeds.
The name Magaleppo usually refers to seedlings of wild Prunus mahaleb, unless otherwise specified. To obtain predictable characteristics in commercial horticulture, selected clonal rootstocks derived from this species are used.
