The GISELA 5 rootstock (and GISELA 5A variation) is used in commercial and amateur horticulture to create semi-dwarf trees. It allows for a reduction in the growth vigor of grafted plants by 50% or more compared to seedlings and does not produce root suckers.

Plants require fertile, well-moistened soils and are sensitive to drought. The rootstock is susceptible to fungal diseases such as Pseudomonas, Phytophtora, and Armillaria, while possessing resistance to dwarf viruses and necrotic ringspot virus.
