S 1 is classified as a vegetative rootstock for pear, derived from quince seedlings. Its primary purpose is to be used as a base for grafting pear varieties, which contributes to earlier tree bearing and an increase in fruit size.

This rootstock is characterized by good compatibility with most pear varieties and adaptation to regional climatic conditions. In international practice, quince group rootstocks, to which S 1 belongs, require consideration of winter hardiness indicators when grown in the conditions of the Baltic states.
