Variety description

10 August 2026

The name Sommerbutterbirne is used in German-language pomology as a descriptive term for a group of summer pears. This name most often refers to the historical variety Gute Graue, known since the 17th century and having French roots. There is no information regarding the existence of an independent breeding variety with this name.

Trees in this group are characterized by vigorous growth and form a large, broad crown. The fruits are medium-sized and have an ovoid or elliptical shape; the skin is usually greenish-yellow, often with a characteristic brownish or russet hue. Consumer maturity occurs from mid-August to mid-September.

The fruit flesh is buttery, juicy, and aromatic, intended for fresh consumption. The old varieties of this group are considered hardy and undemanding, although early flowering makes them sensitive to spring frosts.
