The name derives from the Italian word for "sword" and points to the characteristic elongated, firm shape of the fruits. Under this name, in different regions of Italy, particularly in Lazio and the Dolomite Alps, various local varieties may be hidden, which are sometimes identified with other old varieties.

Uniform official agronomic characteristics are absent, as SPADA is not a registered variety. One of the well-known varieties in this group is Pera Spadona di Castel Madama, whose fruits are distinguished by their large size, juiciness, sweet taste, and greenish-yellow skin color.
