The ViruTherm-1 rootstock belongs to the species Pyrus x michauxii and is intended for use in commercial and amateur horticulture as a base upon which pear fruit varieties are grafted. The primary goal of its creation was to ensure resistance to pear wilt caused by phytoplasma.
Plants on this rootstock exhibit a growth vigor 20–30% lower than those on seedling rootstocks. The root system is characterized as well-developed, fine, and fibrous. The rootstock is suitable for cultivation on dry, sandy, and gravelly soils, demonstrating tolerance to high lime content and the ability to grow in acidic soils with a pH down to 5.5.
Among the agronomic traits, it is noted for the absence of chlorosis caused by soil pH levels, as well as high winter hardiness down to -20°C and resistance to high temperatures. The rootstock demonstrates good compatibility with all tested pear varieties.
