The variety belongs to the group of culinary stewing pears. The name is associated with the historical method of storing fruits in pits under a cover of straw or reeds. The fruits have yellowish-white, firm and moderately juicy flesh with a distinct aroma; the taste after stewing is slightly sour and tart.
Fruits are harvested from the beginning of September to October; they retain their consumer properties until February. The tree is self-fertile and grows well on quince rootstock. The variety shows resistance to scab on dry and elevated soils, but becomes susceptible to fruit tree canker in wet areas.
