The variety was obtained by crossing Salix viminalis and a Russian clone of Salix schwerinii. The plant is intended for industrial cultivation in a short-rotation energy plantation system for the purpose of biomass production.
Bjoern is considered one of the industrial standards of Swedish energy willow breeding. It is often used as a parent form for the creation of new varieties. In scientific research, the variety was examined during studies of wood structure and tension wood formation.
