The SW Sherwood variety is used in wood biomass production. It also acts as genetic material for breeding work and the creation of new hybrid willow varieties.

The variety was developed within the framework of a Swedish breeding program aimed at increasing resistance to pathogens, pests, and adverse climatic conditions.
