The variety is a folk selection cultivated since the early 19th century in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, where it is found under the names Puikula or Lapin puikula. The tubers have a small, elongated, slightly flattened and curved shape, thin smooth skin, and shallow eyes.
The plant is adapted to the short growing seasons of high latitudes. The variety is considered susceptible to diseases when cultivated in warm climates, so its production is traditionally concentrated in northern regions or high-mountain valleys. There are clones with white or red skin.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
