The variety was identified in the 1930s as one of two forms of the Timilia population. The plant is characterized by a short vegetation cycle, which is why it is sown in spring or late winter under Sicilian conditions. The wheat is noted for its high tillering index, thin stems, and high resistance to drought and diseases, requiring no intensive agricultural technologies.

The grain is small in size and dark in color. Its flour contains high protein, but has a low gluten index, features a gray hue, and contains a high amount of bran and germ elements. The produce is used for making traditional black bread, pasta, and craft beer.
