The variety is a rare local grape species traditionally grown in Spain. Historically, the variety was considered forgotten, but in recent decades, work has been underway to identify and recover it. The variety is officially included in the Spanish register of commercial grape varieties.

CHURRIAGO belongs to industrial varieties intended for wine production. The berries of the variety are black. Studies of the chemical composition of the fruit skin have shown that the main anthocyanin in them is malvidin-3-glucoside. Depending on growing conditions, the variety can reach maturity by October.

Scientific work on this variety is focused on genetic identification, conservation, and analysis of oenological properties. The variety is of interest for the adaptation of viticulture to climate change due to its potential resistance to local environmental stress factors.
