The variety belongs to the types with a bisexual flower and medium vine vigor. Young shoots have dense tomentose pubescence; leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, deeply or medium-dissected. Bunches are predominantly large, conical or cylindrical-conical in shape. Large dark blue berries are covered with a waxy bloom and contain juicy flesh.

Cinsault is characterized by high drought tolerance and high heat requirements, while possessing low winter hardiness and susceptibility to fungal diseases, such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. The variety is widely used in breeding, in particular, it is one of the "parents" of the Pinotage variety. Wines based on Cinsault are characterized by softness, low tannin content, and pronounced fruity aromatics.
