The variety has a number of synonyms, including Fer Servadou, Brocol, Pinenc, and Mansois. It originates from Southwest France; the name is associated either with the Latin word for "wild" or with the high hardness of the vine wood.

The vines require short pruning due to their fruiting characteristics. The clusters are medium-sized and compact; the berries are black, ranging from small to medium in size.

The variety has low sensitivity to powdery mildew and is resistant to grey mold, but it is susceptible to damage by leafhoppers. The wines are characterized by a deep color, pronounced tannin content, and aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants, and spices.
