Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has ancient origins, presumably from wild vines, and is known by many synonyms, such as Braucol, Mansois, and Pinenc. The name Fer is associated with the exceptional hardness of the wood, and Servadou with the ability of the berries to be stored for a long time.

The plant is characterized by medium or vigorous growth and requires long pruning due to the uneven fertility of the buds. The leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed. The bunches are medium-sized, compact, the berries are black, small to medium in size, with thick skin.

The variety has resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, is practically not affected by grey mold, and shows relative resistance to frosts, but it is highly susceptible to leafhoppers and European grapevine moth. Yield is estimated as medium.

It is used for the production of wines with expressive tannins capable of aging. The aroma of the wines is dominated by notes of red fruits, spices, and mineral shades. It is often used in blends, although in some regions it is the dominant variety.
