The variety belongs to traditional local Spanish varieties and is considered a relict, which is preserved in old vineyards as part of genetic diversity. Genetic studies using STMS markers confirm that the Rojo, Negro, and Tinto forms are identical and differ only in berry skin color.

The variety was traditionally cultivated in the Andalusia, Navarre, and Aragon regions. In old plantings, it is often found on the edges of vineyards. Systematized agrotechnical data, including maturity dates, growth parameters, or disease resistance, are absent in open publications.
