The variety is autochthonous to the Castile and León region, historically cultivated in the province of Valladolid. It has a number of synonyms, the most well-known of which is Bastardo Negro, as well as Molar and Molar Preto.
It belongs to the category of early-ripening varieties; in Spanish conditions, ripening occurs around August 25. It is a technical (wine) variety, characterized by a balanced accumulation of sugars and organic acids.
Currently, the variety is classified as a minor variety and is being actively studied as a tool for adapting viticulture to climate change in order to maintain stable wine quality as temperatures rise.
