The variety is a wine (technical) grape used for the production of red wines. In winemaking, it is often used in blends with varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.

Wines made from this variety are characterized as full-bodied, possessing aromas of ripe fruit, plum, and hints of spice. They are distinguished by the presence of noticeable but not aggressive tannins and a long finish.
