The variety was obtained in the Charentes region in France. The plant is characterized by late bud break, which provides it with relative resistance to spring frosts.
The name Select is often used in winemaking as a marketing designation for wine collections, under which various grape varieties may be hidden that have no relation to the biological variety bred by J.-L. Vidal.
