Savagnin blanc is an ancient autochthonous variety originating from the Alpine region. The plant is characterized by moderate growth, average yield, and late maturity. The crop requires a long, dry, and relatively warm autumn, and prefers marl and gravel soils.
Morphologically, the variety is represented by small, dense clusters and small, round, green-yellow berries with thick skins. The variety is relatively hardy to cold, however, it shows sensitivity to downy mildew and powdery mildew, and is prone to flower drop during the flowering period.
The variety is a wine grape and is used exclusively in winemaking. Wine materials are distinguished by high sugar accumulation while maintaining acidity, which provides the wines with structure and the capacity for long aging. In Switzerland, it is found under the names Heida or Païen.
