The variety has German roots, with the first documentary mentions dating back to the 15th century. Genetically, it is the result of a natural cross between the Gouais Blanc variety and a variety considered to be a descendant of Traminer. The variety is intended exclusively for winemaking, including the production of dry, sweet wines, as well as wines from late-harvest grapes and those affected by noble rot.
The vine is characterized by good endurance and high frost resistance, which allows it to be cultivated in cool climates. Late bud break helps the variety avoid spring frosts. Morphologically, it is characterized by light green leaves, felt-like pubescence on the tip of the young shoot, compact clusters, and small berries with thin skin.
The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew, grey mold, and bacterial blight. The thin skin of the berries makes it sensitive to grey mold, which allows for the production of wines from "noble rot". The wines are characterized by naturally high acidity, rich aromatics, and aging potential, during which mineral and "petrol" notes develop.
