The variety is an interspecific hybrid obtained by crossing the varieties Chancellor (Seibel 7053) and Subéreux (Seibel 6905). It belongs to wine grape varieties and was historically valued for its resistance to common diseases, which allowed for a reduction in the need for chemical treatment of plantings.

The grape possesses a specific chemotype and a high polyphenol content in the wood. The variety was widespread in France until the 1980s; currently, its commercial importance has declined, and it is considered primarily as a historical contribution to breeding.

In publications, the variety appears more often under the name Villard Noir or synonyms (Villar Chernyi, SV 18-315), whereas 18315 Seyve-Villard is its official identifier in planting material catalogs.
