The variety was obtained by crossing Petit Bouschet and Grenache varieties. It belongs to the mid to late maturity group. Flowers are hermaphroditic. Leaves are large, moderately dissected, dark green, smooth, with downward-curved margins and medium pubescence on the underside.

The variety features high yield and is undemanding. The thick skin of the berries provides resistance to rot during transportation, however, the variety requires attention to the prevention of powdery mildew and downy mildew. The grapes are valued for high content of phenolic compounds.

It is used exclusively for the production of red wines. Due to its ability to produce deeply colored juice, the variety is used to enhance the color and depth of blended wines, as well as for creating varietal wines.
