The variety is autochthonous to northwestern Portugal. It is a wine grape used in winemaking to create wines with high acidity, distinct body, and notes of red berries such as raspberry, cranberry, and tart cherry.

The plant is characterized by a medium budburst period and a long ripening period. It forms small dark blue or black berries, collected in compact bunches. Traditionally, the variety is cultivated on high trellises and pergolas and is characterized by low yields.

The variety is adapted to the cool and humid oceanic climate of the Minho region and is practically not found outside of Portugal.
