The variety is autochthonous to Portugal and is found predominantly in the central region, as well as in Douro and Trás-os-Montes. Due to extremely limited cultivation areas, it is considered rare.
The berries have a dark color. The variety possesses many synonyms, many of which coincide with the names of other Portuguese varieties, which complicates its identification. Genetic studies confirm that some samples previously considered distinct varieties are identical to Alvarelhão Ceitão.
Specific data on morphology, disease resistance, lodging, or maturity group are not described in available publications. Agronomic characteristics of the Alvarelhão parent variety are not applicable to this variety without direct evidence.
