The vines have high vigor. Leaves are medium-sized, wedge-shaped, five-lobed, and slightly to moderately incised. Clusters are large, conical, often winged, and dense in structure. Berries are medium-sized, slightly flattened, blackish-blue in color with a thick waxy bloom and thin skin.
The variety is characterized by high susceptibility to downy mildew, rots, and other fungal diseases. The wine base has an intense color, high tannin content, and aromas of overripe fruit or leather, making it sought after in blends to provide structure and color to wines.
